Tu último disparo // Your last shot (by Frieke Janssens)

La fotógrafa con sede en Bélgica Frieke Janssens obtuvo bastante atención el año pasado por su serie de retratos mostrando niños pequeños fumando (no te preocupes, eran falsas), y vuelve ahora con otro proyecto de fotografía inquietante. Este último se titula: “Tu último disparo”, y consiste en retratos de personas que algún día podrían ser usados en sus lápidas. Cada uno de ellos se titula con un nombre, una fecha de nacimiento y un guión que conduce a una fecha desconocida. La foto de arriba se subtitula, “Marcia (15 de diciembre de 1961 – )”.

Janssens dice que aunque a nadie le gusta pensar en su propia muerte, es usual el caso de que sus familiares se quedan luchando por obtener fotografías utilizables cuando fallezca. La pregunta entonces aparece: “¿cómo se sentiría el fallecido acerca de esta foto?”

Por lo tanto, Janssens quiere dar a la gente el control sobre la forma en que serán retratados una vez que hayan partido.

“Mi preferencia personal va por los retratos estáticos, como eran tomados con ocasión de las bodas en el comienzo del siglo 20. Mi objetivo es hacer un retrato icónico que sea hermoso, sereno y sin miedo, preferentemente con una sonrisa suave, indicando que el modelo es claramente consciente del hecho de que esta imagen se utilizará durante un tiempo muy largo por venir.

[El proyecto no es siniestro], la vida y la muerte están inevitablemente ligados. En Bélgica todavía parece haber un tabú en torno a la idea de la muerte. Como fotógrafa, creo que el momento en que uno reflexiona sobre su propia muerte es un momento precioso para compartir y retratar. “

Janssens está ofreciendo sesiones de retrato “Último disparo” que incluyen la propia toma, maquillaje, asistencia, estilismo y post-producción. Los retratos terminados se entregan al cliente como discos de porcelana ovalados. El coste? aproximadamente $1060 más impuestos.

Una frase en la página web oficial explica, “Tu último disparo no será tu disparo más barato, pero bueno… sólo se vive una vez.”

Belgian-based photographer Frieke Janssens received quite a bit of attention last year for her portrait series showing young children smoking (don’t worry, they were faked), and now he’s back with another unsettling photography project. This latest one is titled, “Your Last Shot,” and consists of portraits of people that will one day be used on their tombstones. Each one is captioned with a name, a birth date, and a dash leading to an unknown date. The photo above is captioned, “Marcia (December 15, 1961 – ).”

Janssens says that although no one likes to think about their own death, it’s usually the case that their family members are left scrambling for useable photographs when they pass away. The question then becomes, “how would the deceased feel about this photo?”

Thus, Janssens wants to give people control over how they will be portrayed once they’ve departed.

“My personal preference goes to static portraits as they were taken at the occasion of weddings at the beginning of the 20th century. My aim is to make an iconic portrait that is beautiful, serene and fearless, preferably with a gentle smile, indicating that the model is clearly aware of the fact that this portrait will be used for a very long time to come.

[The project isn’t sinister], life and death are inevitably linked. In Belgium there still seems to be a taboo around the thought of death. As a photographer, I feel that the moment when one reflects about their own death is a precious moment to be shared and portrayed.”

Janssens is offering “Last Shot” portrait sessions that include the shoot itself, make up, assistance, styling, and post-production. Finished portraits are given to the customer as oblong porcelain discs. The cost? ~$1060 plus tax.

A tagline on the official website explains, “Your last shot will not be your cheapest shot, but hey… you only live once.”
