Mario Testino celebra sus 30 años como fotógrafo. Llegó a Londres, desde su Perú natal, en 1976. Primero trabajó como camarero y sólo la casualidad (ya había probado con Economía, Derecho y Relaciones Internacionales) y la necesidad de un visado le llevó a estudiar fotografía. Tres décadas después, se ha convertido en el retratista y amigo de las estrellas, el fotógrafo de las mujeres.
“Me interesa la alta moda por su fantasía tanto como el desnudo por su simplicidad. Para conectar estos dos mundos tenía que pasar por el momento del desvestirse, que para mí también es muy importante. Muchas veces no es el desnudo en sí lo que te atrae, sino la idea de que alguien va a desvestirse. Quizás ese es el lado de la exhibición que tiene un toque de erotismo. Gran parte del trabajo fotográfico en el campo de la moda implica unos procedimientos muy estáticos, muy orquestados, pero a mí me gusta eliminar la sensación de que se trata de algo preparado. (…) Con frecuencia me propongo que mi trabajo parezca como si hubiera tenido la grandísima suerte de entrar en una habitación en el momento preciso para hacer la foto.”
Testino no es contrario a los retoques. Ni en las fotografías ni en la vida real. “Todo artista tiene derecho a una expresión propia. El retoque [fotográfico] viene existiendo de toda la vida y cada uno tiene el derecho a expresarse como quiere. El retoque nos da algo para soñar.”
“El fotógrafo [de moda] trata de traer a la modelo a un universo suyo. Para mí, la persona es sumamente importante. La belleza en sí es una cosa sin interés. Trato de sacar esa belleza que viene de adentro, que es lo que hace la diferencia entre una modelo o la otra, cuál es su personalidad.”

Mario Testino celebrates 30 years as a photographer. He came to London from his native Peru in 1976. He first worked as a waiter and only by chance (I had already tried with Economics, Law and International Relations) and the need for a visa led him to study photography. “I am interested in high fashion for its fantasy as much as the naked for its simplicity. To connect these two worlds I had to go through the time of undress, which for me is also very important. Many times it is not nudity itself that you attracts, but the idea that someone is going to undress. Maybe that’s the side of the display having a touch of eroticism. Much of the photographic work in the field of fashion implies a very static procedures, well orchestrated, but I like to eliminate the feeling that something is prepared. (…) I often suggest that my work looks as if I had the very great fortune of walking into a room at the right time to take the picture.”
Testino is not contrary to the tweaks. Neither in the photographs or in real life. “Every artist has the right to self-expression. The retouch [photo] is there for a lifetime and each one has the right to speak as he wishes. The retouch gives us something to dream.”
“The photographer [fashion] is to bring the model to a universe you. For me, the person is extremely important. The beauty itself is a thing of no interest. I try to get that beauty comes from within, which is what that makes the difference between a model or the other, what is her personality.”
