Las cámaras oscuras son, literalmente, más antiguas que Jesús, pero un par de cineastas llamados Romain Alary y Antoine Levi han conseguido reinventar el tropo óptico gracias a la magia del timelapse. Sus “películas estenopéicas” capturan el paso del tiempo a través de cámaras oscuras del tamaño de un apartamento, por todo el mundo.
Para los no iniciados o confundidos, esta es la esencia de lo que está pasando en estos videos. El concepto detrás de la cámara oscura es demasiado simple para ser creído: Es un pequeño agujero hecho bien en una caja oscura o habitación. La luz brillante del exterior se cuela por el agujero y se posa en la pared opuesta del espacio creando una imagen perfectamente conservada de la escena exterior. La imagen resultante está al revés, pero los pintores del Renacimiento descubrieron que un simple espejo la voltea de nuevo (una idea que les ayudó a alcanzar una escala perfecta y la perspectiva en sus cuadros).

Camera obscuras are literally older than Jesus—but a pair of filmmakers named Romain Alary and Antoine Levi have managed to reinvent the optical trope thanks to the magic of timelapse. Their “pinhole movies” capture the passage of time across apartment-sized camera obscuras all over the world.
For the uninitiated or confused, here’s the gist of what’s going on in these videos. The concept behind the camera obscura is almost too simple to be believed: It’s a pin-sized hole made in either a darkened box or room. Bright light from the outside pours through the pinhole and lands on the opposite wall of the dark space—creating a perfectly-preserved image of the scene outside. The resulting image is upside-down, but Renaissance painters discovered that a simple mirror flips it back (an insight that helped them achieve perfect scale and perspective in their paintings).
Their latest movie by Alary and Levi, shows the view outside a chic Parisian apartment.
