Seguro que todo el mundo conoce las míticas fotos de Jean Guichard (París, 1952). Circulan por todo el mundo en forma de pósters. Casi todos ellos son de motivos marítimos: paisajes y, sobre todo, faros.
Guichard quedó prendado del encanto del mar durante su servicio militar en la Marina francesa durante los 70 y necesitó fotografiarlo. En una escala en Groenlandia se compró su primera Nikon, que pagó vendiendo fotos a la tripulación del barco.
Al salir de la marina comenzó su carrera como fotógrafo y acabó especializándose en lo que más le gustaba: el mar. De hecho, uno de sus proyectos más famosos es “Faros en la tempestad” y, de esa serie, la foto más conocida es esta tomada en el faro de La Jument (en Bretaña, Francia) el 21 de diciembre de 1989.
No son pocos los accidentes marítimos que hay cada año. Pero, ¿accidentes de faros? Desde luego son menos comunes. El día que hizo la foto, Guichard, estuvo a punto de provocar uno. Y de fotografiarlo.
El viento llevaba varias jornadas soplando a mucha velocidad fruto del temporal bastante fuerte que azotaba la costa bretona. Guichard, que se encontraba en la región fotografiando, decidió acercarse con el helicóptero que usaba para hacer las fotos de su proyecto a las inmediaciones de la isla de Ouessant.
El farero de La Jument, Théodore Malgorne comenzaba a estar asustado. Este temporal era más fuerte que otros. Las olas habían roto los cristales de las ventanas de la primera planta del faro e incluso se había llevado algunas de sus pertenencias. El agua de mar ya empapaba la zona más baja del interior de la construcción.
La situación comenzaba a entrañar peligro y Malgorne esperaba ya el rescate con nerviosismo en las zonas más altas del faro. Al oir un helicóptero en el exterior el desesperado farero respiró aliviado al entender que habían llegado los servicios de rescate. Corriendo bajó a la puerta del faro, salió y observó el helicóptero.
Sólo en el mismo segundo en que vio el helicóptero de Guichard comprendió su error y fue consciente de la enorme ola que estaba rompiendo contra el faro. Por puro instinto retrocedió a protegerse. Guichard acababa de disparar y dejar registrado el suceso, Malgorne acababa de salvar su vida casi de milagro.
