Dayanita Singh nació en Nueva Delhi en 1961. Comenzó en los terrenos más descriptivos de la fotografía documental con sus series sobre un eunuco en Mona y sobre las niñas internas en un ashram en Benarés en “I am as I am”. En ambos casos la existencia de un vínculo personal con el protagonista -Dayanita se convirtió en la mejor amiga de Mona- o con el lugar -el ashram fue fundado por la gurú de su padre- le permitió una aproximación física y emocional que hubiera sido imposible de otra manera.
A partir de “Go Away Closer” Dayanita Singh da un giro a su obra: sus imágenes buscan e insinúan una presencia en la ausencia que otorga a sus imágenes un lirismo desconocido hasta entonces.

Dayanita Singh was born in New Delhi in 1961. She started in the descriptive terrain of documentary photography with her series about a eunuch in Mona and internal girls in an ashram in Varanasi in “I am as I am.” In both cases the existence of a personal bond with the protagonist -Dayanita became Mona’s best friend- or place -the ashram was founded by the guru of her father- allowed her a physical and emotional approach would have been impossible otherwise.
From “Go Away Closer” Dayanita Singh gives a twist to her work, her images hint and seeking a presence in absence which gives her images a previously unknown lyricism.
