La fotógrafa belga Frieke Janssens se inspiró en un vídeo de Youtube, en el que aparecía un niño de Indonesia fumando como un carretero y que fue noticia en prácticamente todos los noticieros de Europa, para crear la serie “Smoking Kids”. Según la autora, “los fumadores adultos son la norma social, por lo que quería aislar el enfoque del espectador sobre el tema de fumar en sí. Sentí que el consumo de los niños tiene un impacto surrealista sobre el espectador y obliga a ver realmente el acto de fumar en vez de hacer suposiciones acerca de la persona que realiza el acto”.
Para tranquilidad de todos, la autora de las fotografías asegura que no hubo cigarrillos reales en el set. Una mezcla de tizas, queso, velas e incienso, unido a una buena iluminación, el saber hacer de la fotógrafa y, por supuesto, una magnífica interpretación de los pequeños, dio como resultado esta serie de catorce fotografías que, al menos dan que pensar.

The Belgian photographer Frieke Janssens was inspired by a Youtube video, which featured a child in Indonesia smoking like a trooper and made headlines in the news almost every European, to create the series “Smoking Kids”. According to the author, “adult smokers are the social norm, so I wanted to isolate the viewer’s focus on the issue of smoking itself. I felt that the use of children has a surreal impact on the viewer and forces actually see the act of smoking rather than make assumptions about the person performing the act”.
To keep everybody, she says the pictures were not real cigarettes on set. A mixture of chalk, cheese, candles and incense, together with good lighting, the expertise of the photographer and, of course, a magnificent performance of small, resulted in this series of fourteen photographs, at least give something to think about.
