In Memoriam: Lucien Clergue (1934-2014)

“Lucien Clergue acaba de morir. Él era un narrador de historias fantásticas, un hermoso ser humano y un gran fotógrafo. Fue el creador del festival de Arles, el amigo de Picasso y Cocteau, el poeta de los desnudos. De hecho, es una era de la Fotografía la que está desapareciendo con él. Personalmente le debo algunos momentos hermosos, las proyecciones en el Teatro Antique “teatro antiguo», Almuerzos y cenas en Arlés, París y Nueva York…
Extendemos nuestro más sentido pésame a su esposa Yolanda y Ana y Olivia, sus hijas.
Te vamos a echar de menos, Lucien.”

“Lucien Clergue just passed away. He was a fantastic storyteller, a beautiful human being and a great photographer. He was the creator of the Arles festival, the friend of Picasso and Cocteau, the poet of the nudes. In fact it is an era of Photography which is disappearing with him. Personally I owe him some beautiful moments, projections in the Theatre Antique “antic theater », Lunches and dinners in Arles, Paris and New York…

Los gitanos // The gypsies (by Lucien Clergue)

“Los gitanos son parte de mi vida. Cuando yo era un niño mi madre me decía ‘si no eres un buen muchacho los gitanos te llevarán con ellos’. Eran un montón en la ciudad en mayo porque el 14 venían a celebrar la peregrinación de Sarah, su diosa.

Al final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial mi casa fue destruida y nos acercamos a las calles de los gitanos, donde me crié en medio de los padres de los que luego se convirtieron en los Gypsy Kings.

Yo estaba fascinado por la organización social de este pueblo que viven en la casa durante el invierno, y en caravana el resto del año, sin representación de muertos, sin pasado, sin futuro.

Ir cada año a la peregrinación me convirtió en amigo cercano de algunas tribus, y fuí aceptado para fotografiarles en la intimidad. Un día me encontré con una familia del Norte, muy ‘flamencos’ como en la pintura de Jeronimus Bosch, yo no podía creerlo. Como era pobre, ponía película en mi cámara sólo si tomaba algo muy interesante. De repente me doy cuenta de que era increíble y ahora están al final en mi libro.” – Lucien Clergue.

“The gypsies are part of my life. When I was a young kid my mother was telling me ‘if you are not a nice boy the gypsies will take you with them’. They were a lot in the city in May because on the 14th they come to the pilgrimage celebrating Sarah, their goddess.

At the end of the World War II, my home was destroyed and we move to the gypsies streets, where I grew up in the middle of the parents of the one who became the Gypsy Kings.

I was fascinated by the social organization of this people living in house during the winter time, and in caravan the rest of the year, no representation of dead people, no past, no future.

Going every year to the pilgrimage I became close friend to some tribes, and was accepted to photograph their intimate. One day I found a family from the North, very “Flemish’s” out of painting by Jeronimus Busch, I couldn’t believe. As I was poor I put my film in my camera only if I took very interesting. Suddenly I realize it was incredible and they are at the end of my book now.” – Lucien Clergue.

Cualquiera que sea la forma en que el agua acaricia una mujer desnuda o la apasionada intensidad de una corrida de toros, Lucien Clergue inmortaliza sus imágenes con gracia y delicadeza. A los 19 años en una corrida de toros local, tras un encuentro fortuito con Pablo Picasso, Clergue fue empujado al dinámico mundo del arte y la fotografía. Como fotógrafo de arte, autor, educador y cineasta, ha deslumbrado a un público internacional con su imagen refinada y hermosa.

Emergiendo como artista durante la época cubista y surrealista, Clergue ha atribuido gran parte de sus influencias a estos movimientos. Al principio de su carrera, el fotógrafo Edward Weston le inspiró a explorar el arte del desnudo, que comprende la mayor parte del trabajo de Clergue. El ha redefinido por completo la estética de fotografiar el cuerpo desnudo.

Clergue se ha presentado con innumerables premios incluyendo la Legión de Honor por el Ministro de la Cultura en París en diciembre de 2003. Además de 20 películas, incluyendo una nominación para un Premio de la Academia, 75 libros, incluyendo Poesie Photographique, publicación de 2003. Lucien Clergue: GrandsNus de 1999 publicado por Umschau / Braus, y como fundador y productor de la mayor fiesta anual de la fotografía europea, Les Recontres Internationales de la Photographie, Lucien Clergue continúa produciendo imágenes sorprendentes e hipnóticas y es considerado como uno de los más prolíficos fotógrafos del siglo 21.

El trabajo de Clergue se encuentra en las colecciones del Museo de Arte Metropolitano, el Museo de Arte Moderno, Centro Georges Pompidou, el Centro de Fotografía Creativa, y muchos otros museos y colecciones privadas alrededor del mundo.

Whether it’s the way water caresses a female nude or the passionate intensity of a bullfight, Lucien Clergue immortalizes his images with grace and finesse. At 19 at a local bullfight, after a chance meeting with Pablo Picasso, Clergue was thrust into the dynamic world of art and photography. As a fine art photographer, author, educator, and filmmaker, he has dazzled an international audience with his refined and beautiful images.

Emerging as an artist during the Cubist and Surrealist era, Clergue has attributed much of his influences to these movements.
