“Las fotografías de Herbert List son la expresión de un mundo imposible y perdido: una melancolía. Incluso en un trabajo que a priori se calificaría de fotoperiodismo, como la serie dedicada a Múnich, arrasada por los bombardeos después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, la sensibilidad de List es la misma que cuando fotografía las ruinas griegas, la de un esteta; nuestro fotógrafo no capta tanto un evento, una actualidad o los efectos de los bombardeos como una nostalgia. Y más, parece que al final de su vida, List abandonó prácticamente la fotografía para consagrarse al coleccionismo de dibujos de maestros del manierismo y del barroco italiano entre los siglos XVI y XVIII. Entre hacer fotos de ruinas y fragmentos de esculturas clásicas y torsos masculinos o coleccionar dibujos antiguos, no hay diferencia: se trata de la misma utopía y de la misma melancolía.” (por Jaume Vidal Oliveras)

Even in a job that is a priori rate of photojournalism, as the series dedicated to Munich, devastated by bombing after WWII, the sensitivity of List is the same as when shooting the Greek ruins, that of an esthete; our photographer captures both not an event, news or effects of the bombing as a nostalgia. And more, it seems that at the end of his life, List practically abandoned photography to devote to collecting drawings and masters of the Italian Baroque mannerism between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. Herbert List (Alemania, 1903-1975) fue un artista de formación clásica que combinó el amor por la fotografía con una fascinación por el surrealismo y el clasicismo. List llegó a convertirse en el fotógrafo más destacado del estilo Fotografia Metafísica. Él ha descrito sus imágenes como “visiones compuestas donde [mis] estructuras tratan de capturar la esencia mágica que habita y anima el mundo de las apariencias.”

Herbert List (Germany, 1903-75) was a classically educated artist who combined a love of photography with a fascination for Surrealism and Classicism. List rose to become the most prominent photographer of the Fotografia Metafisica style. He has described his images as “composed visions where [my] arrangements try to capture the magical essence inhabiting and animating the world of appearances.”
