Ataviado con una pequeña cámara de mano, y siempre en bicicleta, se erigió en una figura emblemática del mundo de la moda, fotografiando tanto las grandes estrellas consolidadas como a las mujeres y hombres anónimos que anticipaban desde las calles los futuros patrones de estilo y vestimenta.
La directora de Vogue, Anne Wintour, señalaba que “todas nos vestimos para Bill”.
En 2008, el gobierno francés le galardonó con la “Legión de Honor”, y en 2009 fue nombrado un “hito viviente” de Nueva York por la ciudad.
Paradójicamente, Cunningham era conocido por su humildad y austeridad. Vivía en un pequeño apartamento repleto de negativos de sus trabajos, y siempre desayunaba en la misma cafetería debajo de su casa.
“El dinero es lo más barato que existe. Lo más caro es la libertad”, solía decir.
En 2010, el documental sobre su vida “Bill Cunningham New York” fue estrenado en el Museo de Arte Moderno de la ciudad.
