John Lennon pensaba que Nueva York era el centro del universo y una vez hasta llegó a asegurar que vio pasar un platillo volador por la terraza de su edificio, «y eso que estaba sobrio», según relata Bob Gruen, su fotógrafo personal. «Estaba completamente sobrio ese día, pero insistía en que había visto un platillo volador. Un día me dijo ‘Bob: quiero que me tomes una serie de fotos en la terraza. Yo estaré apuntándote al lugar donde lo vi’», contó Gruen. Conocido como «el fotógrafo de las estrellas del rock» (incluidos The Clash, Led Zeppelin y The Rolling Stones), Gruen se dedicó ocho años a fotografiar al ex Beatle y su esposa, la artista Yoko Ono. La mayoría de las fotos, realizadas en el estudio de grabación de Lennon, en concierto, en su habitación en la residencia Dakota, en el Central Park, en bares y ratos de ocio, las publicó en un libro titulado “John Lennon: The New York Years”. Las 150 fotografías seleccionadas, muchas de las cuales no se han publicado antes, recorren la tumultuosa vida del ex Beatle entre 1972 y 1980, el año de su muerte. Gruen conoció a Lennon en el Teatro Apollo de Harlem, donde tuvo oportunidad fotografiarle. Lennon le pidió que se las dejara en casa, por debajo de la puerta y, tiempo después, le invitó a subir a la habitación de su hotel.

One day he told me ‘Bob, I want you to take a series of photos of me on the terrace. I will be gunning to where I saw it’, told Gruen. Known as “the photographer of rock stars” (including The Clash, Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones), Gruen was devoted eight years to photograph the former Beatle and his wife, artist Yoko Ono. Most of the photos, taken in the studio recording of Lennon, in concert, in his room at the Dakota residence in Central Park, in bars and leisure, were published in a book entitled “John Lennon: The New York years”. The 150 selected photographs, many of which have not been published before, run through the tumultuous life of former Beatle between 1972 and 1980, the year of his death. Gruen met Lennon at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, where he had the opportunity to photograph him. Lennon asked him to leave them at home, under the door and, later, invited him up to his hotel room.
