¿Qué define a un retrato? ¿Sigue siendo un retrato si el sujeto está presente en el encuadre pero oculto a los ojos? Si la respuesta es sí, entonces el fotógrafo Chris Buck ha capturado una serie de retratos de celebridades únicas a través de su proyecto titulado “Presencia”. Si no, entonces cada una de las fotografías simplemente muestra una escena al azar.

¿La fotografía de arriba? Eso es un retrato de la famosa fotógrafa estadounidense Cindy Sherman.

Buck ha estado fotografiando a algunas de las personas más famosas del mundo durante más de 20 años. Para este proyecto, decidió a tomar un giro contra-intuitivo y conceptual de lo que significa retratos de celebridades. Para cada una de las fotos, le pidió a su sujeto famoso que se ocultase en algún lugar dentro del encuadre. La foto resultante tiene al sujeto, tanto en el encuadre y no en el encuadre.

Buck también tiene un testigo a mano para firmar una declaración para cada retrato, afirmando que el individuo famoso estuvo realmente presente.

A Cindy Sherman, artista conceptual por sí misma, le encanta el proyecto. He aquí una cita que dio para el sitio web del proyecto:
“La total idea de tener tu retrato tomado es promover tu producto -tu rostro- y me encanta como esta serie es exactamente lo contrario de eso.”

If the answer is yes, then photographer Chris Buck has captured a series of unique celebrity portraits through his project titled Presence. If not, then each of the photographs simply shows a random scene.

The photograph above? That’s a portrait of famous American photographer Cindy Sherman.

Buck has been shooting some of the most famous people in the world for over 20 years now. For this project, he decided to take a counter-intuitive and conceptual spin on what celebrity portraiture means. For each of the photos, he asked his famous subject to hide somewhere within the frame. The resulting photo has the subject both in and not in the frame.

Buck also has a witness on hand to sign a statement for each portrait, affirming that the famous individual was actually present.

Cindy Sherman, a conceptual artist herself, loves the project. Here’s a quote she gave for the project’s website:
“The whole point of having your portrait taken is to promote your commodity — your face — and I love how this series is the exact opposite of that.”
