Gemelas idénticas // Identical twins (by Diane Arbus, 1967)

A primera vista, esta es una fotografía sobre ‘identidad’, algo muy claro acerca de dos niñas idénticas. Pero un examen más detallado revela que de hecho hay varias cosas que hacen que las dos niñas en la fotografía sean diferentes una de otra. Llevan, por ejemplo, medias estampadas diferentes. La chica de la izquierda, Cathleen, parece más sombría y tiene los ojos caídos, mientras que su hermana, Colleen, se ve como la gemela más brillante y alegre.
Este es un ejemplo de lo difícil que es el sentido de la fotografía, parece que existe “una especie de brecha entre lo que vemos en la fotografía y lo que se nos pide ver”. Hay algunas pistas contextuales en la imagen: no podemos ver la localización (excepto que las chicas están de pie en una zona pavimentada), no podemos determinar su altura y sólo podemos adivinar su edad. “Diane Arbus ha neutralizado efectivamente las condiciones de su existencia”. Cuanto más miramos la imagen, más se hace evidente que las gemelas idénticas son en realidad muy diferentes entre sí, hasta el punto que la imagen podría renombrarse como “Gemelas Diferentes”.

At first glance, this is a photograph about ‘sameness’, it’s something very clear about two identical girls. But closer scrutiny reveals that there are in fact several things which make the two girls in the photograph different from each other. They wear, for example, differently patterned tights. The girl on the left, Cathleen, looks more sullen, and has droopy eyes, whereas her sister, Colleen, looks much the brighter and more cheerful twin.
This is an example of how difficult it is to photograph meaning; it seems that there is a “gap between what we see in the photograph and what we are asked to view”. There a few contextual clues in the image: we cannot see the location (other than that the girls are standing on a paved area), we cannot determine their height and can only guess at their age. “Diane Arbus has effectively neutralised their terms of existence”. The more we look a the image, the more it becomes apparent that these identical twins are in fact very different from each other, to the point where the image could be renamed ‘Different Twins’.
