Sobre los aficionados // About the amateurs (Alfred Stieglitz, 1899)

Permítanme aqui llamar llamar la atención sobre uno de los errores más universalmente populares que tiene que ver con la fotografía – sobre la clasificación supuestamente excelente del trabajo como profesional, y la utilización del término de amateurs (aficionados) para transmitir la idea de trabajos inmaduros y para excusar fotografías atrozmente pobres. Como una cuestión de hecho, casi todo el mejor trabajo que se está haciendo, y que siempre se ha hecho, ha sido por aquellos que siguen la fotografía por el amor a ella, y no sólo por razones meramente financieras. Como su nombre lo indica, un amateur es alguien que trabaja por amor, y visto desde esta perspectiva la inexactitud de la clasificación popular es evidente.

Let me here call attention to one of the most universally popular mistakes that have to do with photography – that of classing supposedly excellent work as professional, and using the term amateur to convey the idea of immature productions and to excuse atrociously poor photographs. As a matter of fact nearly all the greatest work is being, and has always been done, by those who are following photography for the love of it, and not merely for financial reasons. As the name implies, an amateur is one who works for love; and viewed in this light the incorrectness of the popular classification is readily apparent.
